Oldham business gets 10-year permission for temporary office

Engineering firm gets 10-year approval for smaller office after admitting its current HQ is mostly empty.

A local engineering firm has won approval to keep a temporary office building at its Greengate site for the next decade, after telling councillors its existing headquarters was simply too big for its needs. Nov Process and Flow Technologies submitted a retrospective planning application after already installing the two-storey modular building near Junction 21 of the M60.

The company's existing office space is only 15 per cent occupied, with around 50 staff expected to use the new facility. Planning officers told the committee that Nov hopes to rent out the larger building, though they admitted the commercial property market 'isn't particularly great' at present.

The temporary structure has already been in use for some time, and council officers confirmed there were no breaches of planning guidelines. The planning officer described the proposal as a 'suitable development' that would meet the company's operational needs while allowing flexibility for the future.

Oldham Council's planning committee unanimously approved the application at their April 15 meeting, granting permission for the building to remain for 10 years. The decision means the company can continue operating from its new, more appropriately sized premises while seeking tenants for its larger existing building.
