New Oldham scheme aims to help young people step into work

Oldham launches 100 apprenticeships in 100 days to help young people into work and support local businesses.

A new campaign launching on May 21 aims to create 100 apprenticeships in 100 days for young people in Oldham, giving them a direct pathway from education into work. The initiative, a partnership between Oldham Council and Oldham College, supports the national Youth Guarantee to ensure every young person can access employment, education or training.

Councillor Mohon Ali, the council's cabinet member for education and skills, said the scheme responds to changing economic demands, particularly for skills in AI and digital technology. 'We want our companies to grow and they can do this by working and shaping the next generation of talent,' he explained.

The campaign will promote the benefits of hiring apprentices and highlight financial support available to employers, including a new Foundation Apprenticeship route. Simon Jordan, principal and CEO of Oldham College, stressed the initiative's broader impact: 'If every local employer creates just one opening, we can collectively redefine Oldham's future.

Employers of all sizes and sectors are being encouraged to participate, with Oldham College's Employer Engagement Team offering support throughout the process. The goal is to have 100 apprenticeship opportunities ready for exam results day, allowing young people to transition directly into good careers.
