New Lidl supermarket opens at Hollinwood Junction in Oldham

New Lidl store opens at Hollinwood Junction, creating 40 local jobs as part of £25m regeneration project.

Oldham's shopping scene has grown with the opening of a new Lidl supermarket at Hollinwood Junction, marking another step forward in the town's £25 million regeneration project. The store, located on Albert Street just off junction 22 of the M60, welcomed its first customers with the Mayor of Oldham, Cllr Arooj Shah, and pupils from Hollinwood Academy cutting the ribbon.

The new supermarket has created up to 40 full-time equivalent jobs, with several positions filled by local residents through the council's Get Oldham Working service. Among them is Tristian Campbell, who was unemployed for six months before landing a role at Lidl. 'Having been unemployed for 6 months, I really feel that without Get Oldham Working and my adviser Dan's support I wouldn't have got this job,' Campbell said.

The Hollinwood Junction development, led by Langtree in partnership with Oldham Council, is due for completion in Summer 2026 and will create around 720 jobs in total. The site already includes Costa Coffee and a Euro Garage, with plans for 2,000 new homes in Oldham town centre and a revamped Spindles market as part of the wider regeneration strategy.

Nick Harvey, Regional Head of Property at Lidl GB, said the opening had been 'a brilliant start' with 'smiles in the bakery aisle' as customers explored the new store. Council Leader Cllr Arooj Shah welcomed the investment, saying it brings 'new jobs, more choice for residents and another boost for our town' as Oldham works to attract more businesses and create a stronger, more vibrant community.
