MP slams fly-tippers trashing Oldham countryside

Fly-tipping has become a weekly crisis in Oldham's countryside, with new government crackdowns proposed to stop rogue dumpers trashing the borough.

Oldham's MP Jim McMahon has launched a scathing attack on fly-tippers who are turning the borough's countryside into dumping grounds. The Labour MP shared a video showing piles of rubbish dumped on a roadside, calling the behaviour 'selfish' and 'baffling'.

McMahon said it's become routine for household, commercial, and builders' waste to be dumped across Oldham's country lanes, parks, and open spaces. 'Not a week goes by that there isn't a mountain of waste ruining our borough,' he stated.

The issue has become so severe that The Oldham Times has published nearly 10 articles about fly-tipping in just the first three months of 2026. Residents have reported hotspots being targeted within days of clean-ups, with some calling the situation 'absolutely disgusting'.

The MP outlined new government proposals to tackle the problem, including community service for offenders, £300 fines, and penalty points on driving licences. Oldham Council has also relaunched its 'Don't Trash Oldham' campaign as part of local efforts to address the growing problem.
