"I belong here" - tribute to headteacher who devoted her life to the children of Oldham
Mavis Clegg, a beloved former headteacher who shaped generations of Oldham children, has died at 92. Known for her unwavering commitment to the town's young people, she led Eustace Street School and Glodwick Infants School through the 1970s and 80s, earning the admiration of pupils, staff, and families across the community.
Born and raised in Oldham, Mavis never considered working anywhere else. 'I belong here,' she would say, turning down opportunities in more affluent areas to serve the children of her hometown. Her greatest joy was listening to children read, and her influence extended far beyond the classroom walls.
Many of her former staff went on to become headteachers and deputy heads themselves, inspired by her guidance and dedication. Outside school hours, Mavis ran the Christ Church Glodwick youth club with her husband Brian, served as Chair of Governors at Hey with Zion and Littlemoor schools, and volunteered at the Royal Oldham Hospital.
A passionate supporter of Oldham Athletic, she travelled to Wembley twice to cheer on the team. Councillor Shaid Mushtaq, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, paid tribute to her lasting impact: 'Mavis Clegg dedicated her life to helping Oldham's children thrive. Her influence will be remembered by many and will continue to be felt for years to come.
