Last of seven dogs found after van theft in Failsworth

All seven dogs stolen in Failsworth van theft have been recovered after a community-led search effort.

A van containing seven dogs was stolen from Medlock Road in Failsworth on Tuesday morning, sparking a frantic search that ended with all the animals safely recovered. The van, belonging to a local dog walking business, was taken shortly after 11am on March 10 and abandoned near Alexandra Park with the dogs dumped inside.

While six of the dogs were found quickly, one remained missing for several days as volunteers and police worked together to track it down. A retired Oldham neighbourhood officer joined forces with Huddersfield Canine Search & Rescue and local PCSOs, following up on multiple sightings reported by the public.

The final dog was located using thermal imaging technology with help from its owner. Sergeant Zahid Iqbal from GMP's Oldham Neighbourhood Team praised the collaborative effort, saying the theft had been 'incredibly upsetting' for the pet owners but that finding all seven dogs was 'definitely a positive result'.

Kirstie Hobson from Huddersfield Canine Search & Rescue described the community response as 'amazing', noting that local PCSOs had supported the searches throughout. Police continue investigating the theft and are appealing for CCTV, dashcam or doorbell footage from the area to help identify those responsible.
