Landlady with big plans took on pub to stop it 'turning into a HMO'

Local landlady takes over struggling Scouthead pub to save it from becoming housing and revive it as community hub.

The Three Crowns pub in Scouthead has reopened under new management after an eight-week closure, with landlady Jodie Bennett determined to revive the struggling local landmark. The 42-year-old, who lives just down the road from the pub, took over in March and reopened on Good Friday, April 3, bringing in a chef from a Michelin-guide restaurant in Saddleworth to overhaul the food offering.

Bennett, who has managed restaurants before but never a pub, said she stepped in to prevent the venue from being converted into an HMO (House in Multiple Occupation). 'It's not had the best reputation in the past couple of years, unfortunately,' she admitted, but believes the pub has potential to become a community hub again.

Since reopening, customers have praised both the food and atmosphere, with dishes like prawns and calamari earning particular acclaim. The pub now serves a wide range of beers including Cruz Campo, Guinness, and Heineken, with cask ales coming soon on a rotational basis.

Looking ahead, Bennett has ambitious plans including a children's play area, monthly 'tipsy tapas' nights, and an over-60s club with discounted meals. 'I have so many ideas, but I'm just trying to get the basics right first,' she said, acknowledging the challenges of getting the pub up and running after the extended closure.
