Oldham childminder Kerry Keenan inspires career change
Kerry Keenan swapped her call centre headset for building blocks and storybooks 12 years ago, and she's never looked back. The mother of two from Oldham made the leap when her youngest daughter was born, realising her busy job no longer fitted with family life.
Today, Kerry runs Kerry Keenan Childminding Service from her home, caring for children from four months to 11 years old alongside her friend Michelle Dixon. They've created something special-a place where children arrive happy and leave even happier, with some reluctant to go home at the end of the day.
The numbers tell part of the story: Kerry has cared for one little girl since she was four months old, and now that child is heading to high school. 'She's part of the team now,' Kerry smiles. 'She's even said she never wants to leave.
Oldham Council has launched its 'Do Something Big' campaign, using Kerry's story to encourage others to consider early years careers. Whether you're looking for a change, returning to work, or seeking meaningful employment, the council says there's no other job satisfaction like it.
Cllr Shaid Mushtaq, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, puts it plainly: 'When you choose to work with our youngest children, you really are doing something big.' For Kerry, it's about more than just childcare-it's about building resilience, creating safe spaces, and being part of families' lives for years to come.
