Oldham manufacturer partners with Salford robotics student

Oldham manufacturer partners with Salford student to boost digital skills through government-backed scheme.

An Oldham plastics manufacturer has brought in fresh digital expertise through a partnership with a University of Salford robotics student, marking a small but significant step in the town's manufacturing evolution. Heyside Plastics, based in Royton, welcomed 28-year-old Enoch Adediran for a three-month placement to explore automation opportunities and help integrate digital technologies into their production processes.

The collaboration came through Made Smarter North West, a government-backed programme designed to help small manufacturers adopt new technologies without taking on excessive risk. For Heyside Plastics, it meant access to cutting-edge thinking without the cost of hiring a full-time specialist. For Enoch, it provided paid, hands-on experience in a real production environment.

Business executive Garreth Brown said the placement filled a vital skills gap and accelerated the company's digital transformation plans. 'Enoch has been a revelation,' Brown said. 'The value he has already brought to the business in such a short time is immense.' During his time at the company, Enoch worked directly on production lines, applying automation concepts and digital tools to practical manufacturing challenges.

The programme represents more than just one internship. Since launching in 2019, Made Smarter has supported over 2,500 manufacturers across the North West with digital advice, technology adoption, and skills development. For Oldham's manufacturing sector, initiatives like this could help local firms stay competitive while creating clear pathways for graduates to find work in the industries that need them most.
