GP prescription changes worry elderly patients
Elderly patients at Shaw's Oak Gables Partnership are facing a major change to how they order repeat prescriptions, with the GP surgery set to ban phone and pharmacy orders from May 1. The practice, based at Crompton Medical Centre on Westway, says patients must now use online systems like Patient Access or the NHS app, or visit in person to fill out a form.
The change has sparked anger in the community, with dozens of residents taking to the I Love Shaw Facebook page to voice concerns. Many pointed out that elderly patients who struggle with technology or cannot easily travel to the surgery will be left behind. One woman said the policy would 'cause problems' for her 82-year-old mother, while another warned it would make life harder for those already dealing with illness.
The practice insists the move is part of a national NHS England initiative and claims most patients won't be affected since it only changes how prescriptions are ordered, not how they're collected. They say they're contacting vulnerable patients individually and will hold NHS App training sessions. A spokesperson stated: 'We will not leave any patients behind and safeguarding will be in place.
However, residents remain unconvinced. One commenter accused the practice of giving 'no consideration' to elderly patients, while another said it 'doesn't make sense' to make the process harder for those who need medication most. NHS Greater Manchester has been asked for comment on the changes, which come as the practice says it's one of the last in Oldham to implement the new system.
