Oldham Council's Get Oldham Working wins national award and secures digital funding

Oldham's employment support service wins national award and secures £266k to help residents get online and into work.

Oldham Council's Get Oldham Working service has secured a major £266,084 funding boost to tackle digital exclusion across the borough. The money from the Digital Inclusion Innovation Fund will launch 'GOW Digital', a new programme designed to help residents who struggle with online services, job applications, and digital skills. This comes hot on the heels of the service winning a national award for its employment support work.

The Tailored Employment Support Award at the ERSA Employability Awards 2025 recognises Get Oldham Working's success in helping local people into sustainable jobs and training. Council Leader Cllr Arooj Shah visited the team in June 2025 to see their work firsthand, meeting staff who support residents with everything from CV writing to interview preparation. The service has already helped hundreds of Oldhamers find work, with particular focus on those facing barriers to employment.

Beyond job support, Get Oldham Working runs targeted programmes like the free eight-week 'Step into the NHS' course, which helps residents pursue healthcare careers. One participant said: 'For a long time I have wanted to work for the NHS. It pleases me to help someone in need of care.' The service also connects young people with employers through careers fairs-over 300 attended the September 2024 event at Queen Elizabeth Hall, with another planned for September 24th.

The new digital inclusion funding addresses a growing problem as more council services and job opportunities move online. Many older residents and those on low incomes lack the devices, internet access, or skills to participate fully in modern life. GOW Digital will provide training, equipment, and ongoing support to bridge this gap.
