Family assessment centre in Royton to expand into next door house

A family assessment centre in Royton has been given the green light to expand into the house next door on Queen Street, despite some residents raising concerns about parking. The centre, which opened in 2023, helps vulnerable families by providing a safe space where parenting skills can be assessed and support offered.

The expansion will create internal access between the two properties and allow two more families to be placed at the centre. Planning officers say the additional people would simply replace the normal comings and goings of a typical household, and the highways officer raised no objections to the proposal.

Supporters of the expansion say the centre has been well-managed with no issues since it opened, and that families are often seen and spoken to by neighbours. One resident commented that the expansion "can only be a positive thing to support more families.

However, five objections were raised about existing parking problems on Queen Street. The centre places families including those with protection plans, parents seeking reunification with children, and parents with learning disabilities or mental health issues. While at the site, assessments are made about parenting skills, children's development, and parents' confidence.
