Eton Star Oldham to Proceed After Government Review

Oldham is set to get a new educational landmark after the government gave the green light to Eton Star Oldham, a groundbreaking partnership between the prestigious Eton College and Star Academies. The decision follows a national review of the proposals, with work now beginning on detailed plans for the college that will be built on the Tommyfield Market car park site in the town centre.

Council Leader Cllr Arooj Shah hailed the announcement as 'great news for Oldham', saying the college will give young people from all backgrounds access to life-changing opportunities. The project aims to combine high academic standards with expanded opportunities, helping to remove barriers and raise aspirations for pupils regardless of where they start in life.

The college represents one of the first of its kind in the country, bringing together the educational expertise of Eton College with Star Academies' experience in running schools. Cllr Shah emphasised that the development will be shaped with input from young people, parents and communities across Oldham, ensuring it delivers for local families.

With the government's confirmation now in place, attention turns to the next steps including detailed design work, delivery planning and engagement with families and communities. The council will work closely with both partners to make sure the college opens doors for generations of Oldham children, potentially transforming life chances in the borough.
