Oldham secondary school to increase pupil places by 100
Ellen House Secondary School in Westwood is set to double its pupil numbers from 80 to 180 after Ofsted inspectors gave the expansion plans their approval. The education watchdog carried out a special inspection at the Waddington Street school earlier this year to check whether the proposed increase would still meet independent school standards.
Inspectors found the school had 'carefully planned' for the growth, with additional classrooms already furnished to a high standard within the current building. The school has also considered staffing needs, ensuring enough teachers will be in place when pupil numbers increase, and has committed to maintaining a high quality of education while actively promoting student wellbeing.
Safeguarding arrangements also passed muster, with Ofsted noting the school has a 'suitable, up-to-date' policy and staff trained to the required level. The school has secured appropriate outdoor space for breaks and PE lessons, and plans to stagger lunch and break times to manage the larger student population effectively.
Ofsted concluded that Ellen House would be likely to meet the relevant independent school standards if it increased its pupil numbers, clearing the way for the expansion. The school has been contacted for comment on when the increased places might become available to families in the area.
