Death of Matt Smith's son a 'tragic reminder' of need to protect nurse title

The death of four-month-old Madison Bruce Smith has exposed a dangerous loophole in how the title 'nurse' can be used in the UK. The infant son of former Oldham Athletic player Matt Smith and Amy Bruce, daughter of ex-Manchester United manager Steve Bruce, was found unresponsive at his family home in Trafford last October.

Madison had been placed to sleep on his front by a maternity nurse employed through Ruthie Maternity Services, despite medical advice that babies should always sleep on their backs. The nurse had no medical qualifications beyond basic first aid, yet was able to describe herself as a 'maternity nurse' without any regulatory oversight.

A post-mortem examination couldn't determine a specific cause of death, but identified that prone sleeping significantly increased the risk of sudden unexpected infant death. Senior coroner Alison Mutch has now called for urgent government action to protect the title 'nurse' so it can only be used by registered professionals on the Nursing and Midwifery Council register.

The Royal College of Nursing has backed the call, saying families deserve to know they can trust the expertise of anyone calling themselves a nurse. The coroner's report highlights how anyone can attach the word 'nurse' to various titles without qualifications, potentially misleading families about their level of expertise and training.
