Historic Cross Keys pub in Uppermill attracts loyal customers
The Cross Keys in Uppermill has been serving locals and visitors for nearly 280 years, with its history stretching back to 1745 when it was known as 'The Gravemakers' due to its former use as a mortuary. Today, it's a thriving country pub that's become something of a destination spot, attracting both loyal regulars and curious newcomers who make the trip to this corner of Saddleworth.
Craig Wilkes and David Devine, who took over the pub in 2023, know the place well-they previously managed it from 2013 to 2018 before taking a break from the industry. When they saw it was available again, they jumped at the chance to return. 'We have some fantastic regulars and we get to see different people all the time,' Wilkes told The Oldham Times.
The pub has built a reputation for its real ales, featuring 48 times in CAMRA's Good Beer Guide over the last 50 years-more than any other pub in Oldham. Their Manchester Pale Ale and bitter remain bestsellers, though a new stout is proving popular. The food menu covers pub classics like homemade pies and puddings, alongside more adventurous specials such as sea bass and Thai curry.
One of the highlights of the year is the annual Rushcart Festival, when the pub hosts the Saddleworth Morris dancers on their tour of the villages. 'That's always a good day because you get to see the Morris teams and, if the weather's nice, enjoy the outside as well-we have a very big outside area here,' Wilkes said. Like all pubs, they're facing pressures from rising costs, but they're focused on keeping the doors open and maintaining what makes the Cross Keys special.
