New community growing hub opens at Berries Field Park in Oldham

New growing hub at Berries Field Park gives Chadderton residents space to grow food and build community connections.

A new community growing hub has officially opened at Berries Field Park in Chadderton, giving local residents a dedicated space to grow their own food and herbs. The project, commissioned by Councillor Abdul Jabbar MBE, was launched with a ceremony attended by the Mayor of Oldham, Cllr Eddie Moores, and representatives from Willmott Dixon.

The £38,000 initiative came about after conversations with local residents, particularly women in the community, who said they lacked access to suitable growing spaces. The hub includes security fencing, a polytunnel, timber planters, and accessible pathways, making it inclusive for people of all ages and abilities.

More than 140 hours of staff volunteering contributed to the project, alongside donations of time and materials from supply chain partners including Wright Landscapes, Faber Joinery, and Rose Scaffolding. Additional financial support came from Lester Cladding, Bretton Architectural, Carters Electrical, and Keith Walton.

Councillor Jabbar said the hub is about giving people the space and support they need to grow their own food while building stronger community links. Mike Poole-Sutherland from Willmott Dixon said the project was a 'no brainer' when asked to get involved, and thanked all partners for making it happen.

The growing hub is now open to everyone and aims to encourage community collaboration, support wellbeing through outdoor activity, and create a welcoming space for residents to come together.
