Oldham pub Colliers Arms overcomes storm damage

The Colliers Arms on Old Lane in Chadderton has bounced back from a battering by Storm Claudia to be crowned Oldham's Pub of the Week. Landlord Patrick Smith, who took over in June 2024, faced his first major challenge when trees crashed through the beer garden shelter during the November storm, forcing a major cleanup.

The 33-year-old from Middleton described the incident as 'bewildering' but praised the community spirit that emerged in the aftermath. Neighbours helped clear debris while the fallen trees were chopped into logs for customers to take home-a gesture that sums up the pub's strong local connections.

Since reopening with a new pagolia installed, the Colliers Arms has continued to thrive as a community hub. Patrick's first shift as landlord coincided with England's Euro 2024 match-a baptism of fire that saw the pub packed with football fans enjoying the newly installed outdoor TV.

The pub, which dates back to 1806 when it was called the Slack Inn, now offers live music on Friday nights and karaoke on Saturdays. Foster's and John Smith's remain the most popular drinks, while the beer garden proves a hit during summer months. Patrick says what makes the Colliers Arms special is how quickly newcomers become familiar faces-'customers feel wanted and that they belong.
