Chadderton teen jailed for Piccadilly Gardens knife attack
A Chadderton teenager has been jailed for nearly four years after a knife attack in Manchester's Piccadilly Gardens that left a man with a serious neck wound. Said Saddat, 19, from Block Lane, pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm at Manchester Crown Court this week over the assault that happened on July 27 last year.
The court heard that just before 9pm, police were called to reports of fighting and a stabbing near the centre of Piccadilly Gardens. Officers found a man in his 20s bleeding heavily from a cut to his neck. He was given first aid at the scene before being rushed to hospital for emergency treatment.
CCTV footage showed Saddat had approached the victim earlier that evening, telling him he was 'not allowed' to be in Piccadilly Gardens. He left but returned minutes later carrying a knife. A violent confrontation followed, resulting in the victim's injuries.
At Manchester Crown Court on February 19, Saddat was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison. Detective Constable Peter Viney, who led the investigation, described it as a 'violent and unprovoked attack' in one of the city centre's busiest areas. He praised the quick actions of officers and members of the public who helped the injured man.
