£20m Chadderton regeneration gets green light
Chadderton is set for a £20 million transformation after the government approved funding through its Pride in Place scheme. The decade-long regeneration programme will focus on boosting local businesses, improving public spaces, and investing in youth services. The first four years will prioritise business and community grants, new CCTV cameras, upgraded pedestrian crossings, and the restoration of historic Foxdenton Hall.
The project was developed by the Chadderton Neighbourhood Board through workshops, focus groups, surveys, and creative engagement sessions, ensuring local priorities drive the improvements. Board chair Laura Windsor-Welsh, director of charity Action Together, emphasised that the scheme is about more than buildings: 'Pride in Place is not just about infrastructure. It is about building social trust, inspiring ambition, and creating a town where everyone feels they belong.
Councillor Arooj Shah, leader of Oldham Council, called the investment a 'huge milestone' and 'a real show of confidence in Oldham as a whole.' She stressed that local people will be at the heart of shaping what happens next. MP Jim McMahon also welcomed the community-led approach, saying it will help deliver improvements that matter to local people and support Chadderton's strong sense of community.
The funding forms part of wider regeneration across the borough, with £20 million earmarked for Alt and £450 million planned for Oldham town centre. The Chadderton Neighbourhood Board, which includes residents, business owners, councillors, and community leaders, will continue gathering public feedback through local meetings and events.
