Bus route 184 diverted after Saddleworth moor fire
Bus passengers on the 184 route face longer journeys after a moorland fire forced a major diversion near Saddleworth. The fire broke out on Tuesday afternoon in Marsden, with flames spreading across the hillside and prompting emergency services to close Mount Road. Bus services are now being diverted along the A62 Manchester Road, adding extra time to journeys between Oldham, Diggle, and Huddersfield.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service worked together to tackle the blaze, which started around 2pm on April 7. Crews remained at the scene into the evening as smoke billowed across the valley. Residents living near the fire were told to keep windows and doors shut to avoid smoke inhalation.
The 184 diversion affects key stops including Fall Lane, Marsden Fall Lane, and Mount Road near Netherley Drive. Bee Network has warned the changes will stay in place 'until further notice' as firefighters continue to monitor the situation. Local councillor.
The fire comes just days after the first warm weather of the year, raising concerns about wildfire risks as summer approaches. Last year saw several moorland fires across Greater Manchester, with Saddleworth Moor particularly vulnerable due to its peat soil. Transport for Greater Manchester says they'll keep passengers updated on when normal service can resume, but for now, commuters should allow extra travel time.
