Building collapses in Oldham town centre injuring three
A building collapse on King Street in Oldham town centre has left three people injured and sent shockwaves through the community. The incident happened around 12:40pm on Tuesday, March 24, when part of the structure gave way, causing severe damage and forcing an immediate evacuation of nearby businesses.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, with fire crews, police, and an air ambulance all responding to the incident. Five people managed to get out of the building before firefighters arrived, while three others suffered injuries that weren't life-threatening. Two of those injured were taken to hospital for treatment.
Witnesses described hearing a loud rumble followed by a massive crash, with one student in a nearby pizza shop saying it sounded like they were being bombed. Another eyewitness called the scene 'carnage', explaining that people were inside the affected shop and waiting at the bus stop outside when the collapse occurred.
The collapse forced the evacuation of all businesses along King Street, with staff at Georgia Fried Chicken being told to switch off their gas and leave immediately. An air ambulance landed on the roof of Mecca Bingo as part of the emergency response, and King Street remains cordoned off while investigations continue.
