Oldham man Amin Chowdhury walks 100 miles for charity
Amin Chowdhury, a well-known Oldham fundraiser, is walking 100 miles from Chadderton to Chester while fasting for Ramadan to raise money for local charities. The 100-mile trek will take him through four mayoral areas in the North West, with leaders from Tameside, Warrington, Chester, and Oldham backing his efforts.
The walk aims to support Mahdlo, a local charity that provides outdoor activities for children with disabilities and learning difficulties. Donations will also be shared with three other causes: young carers services, homeless accommodation, and a domestic abuse refuge.
Amin, who met King Charles after his coronation, has become known for his community work. He organises the British Education Awards and recently set up the Excellence in Oldham Awards to recognise local contributions.
The fundraiser is taking place during Ramadan, when Muslims worldwide focus on charitable giving through Sadaqah and Zakat. Amin hopes to show that his faith is about compassion and bringing people together, not just fasting.
By linking four boroughs in his walk, Amin wants to demonstrate that Ramadan's spirit of unity extends to all communities. He believes the care people share for their neighbourhoods is what makes them great.
