Former Mayor of Oldham Zahid Chauhan will stand down as a councillor after 14 years.

Cllr Chauhan has held the Alexandra ward since 2013 and will not seek to retain the seat at the local elections in May 2027.

He said that after the death of his wife, Afsheen, in 2024, he had realised he "cannot give the role the time, energy and commitment that it deserves."

In a statement, he said: "Since first being elected in 2013, it has been an extraordinary privilege to serve the people of Oldham." He described serving as Mayor of Oldham for two years as one of the greatest honours of his life, and said being appointed an Honorary Freeman of the Borough was something he was deeply humbled to receive.

Cllr Chauhan, who was awarded an OBE in the 2020 New Year's Honours list, said he believed it was right to give someone new the opportunity to come forward. He thanked residents, fellow councillors, council staff, friends and colleagues for their support.

He said: "Until May 2027, I remain your councillor and will continue working hard and supporting residents with the same commitment." He added that his commitment to public service was not ending and he would continue to serve residents in whichever way he can.
