A woman has died in hospital after suffering a suspected medical episode at the wheel of her car and crashing in Wythenshawe, Greater Manchester Police have confirmed.

The collision happened on Friday (June 5) when the driver of a white Ford Ka was seen travelling along the road before she suffered a medical episode and collided with a vehicle travelling in the opposite lane.

The driver, a woman in her 50s, was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition. Despite the efforts of medical staff, she has since died.

An air ambulance landed near the scene to assist with the response. No further details about the occupants of the other vehicle have been released at this stage.

Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash. They are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

In particular, police are keen to speak to anyone who saw the Ford Ka driving in the moments before the collision, anyone who witnessed the incident itself, or any motorists who may have captured dashcam footage of the crash or the vehicle’s movements beforehand.

While this incident took place some distance from Oldham, it serves as a sobering reminder for all drivers about the importance of being medically fit to drive. Medical episodes at the wheel are rare but can have devastating consequences. Motorists are advised to check with their GP if they have any pre-existing conditions that might affect their ability to drive safely.

Greater Manchester Police have not yet released the name of the deceased woman, pending formal identification and notification of next of kin.
