A walker was airlifted from the hills above Dove Stone after breaking an ankle and being unable to get down safely.

The Coastguard helicopter was called to the Ashway Gap area on Saturday, September 12, after the woman got into difficulty.

Greater Manchester Police said officers located her before volunteer mountain rescue personnel from Boarshurst station in Greenfield assessed and treated her. Her injury was immobilised before rescuers moved her to a place where the helicopter could land.

She was then airlifted from the hills. Police said the incident was resolved quickly.

Police reminded visitors that walks around Dove Stone and the surrounding hills can be more challenging than they appear on social media. Wet weather on Saturday made conditions particularly difficult.

Walkers were urged to plan ahead and bring suitable footwear, warm clothing and waterproofs. Greater Manchester Police said: "Dovestones is often portrayed on social media as an easy walk, when in reality conditions can change rapidly."
