Uppermill Whit Friday Band Contest faces uncertain future without more volunteers
Uppermill's historic Whit Friday band contest, dating to 1884, could be its last unless more volunteers come forward, organisers warn.
Organisers of the Uppermill Whit Friday Band Contest have warned the event could disappear unless more volunteers come forward, Saddleworth Independent reports. The contest traces its roots back to 1884, when Uppermill hosted the first brass band contest, and the current committee says the demands of staging it have become too much to manage alone.
Help is needed with planning in the run-up and with practical jobs on the day. No experience is required, with existing committee members offering guidance and training.
Pam Armstrong, who shared the appeal, said: "We desperately want to avoid that happening." The next contest is scheduled for Friday, May 21, 2027.
