Former Oldham councillor Peter Dean has died after serving communities across the borough for over 50 years.

Oldham's Labour Party announced his death on September 28, describing him as "a mentor and friend to us all".

Mr Dean was elected in Werneth, Coldhurst, Failsworth East, and Waterhead during his council career. He served as the borough's mayor between 1997 and 1998 and remained a councillor until he stood down ahead of the 2026 local elections.

Cllr Arooj Shah, who leads Oldham Labour's 18 councillors, said: "He will be missed greatly by all of us, having served communities across Oldham for over 50 years." She added: "Our thoughts are with his wife Sue and his family at this difficult time. May he rest in peace."

Oldham MP Jim McMahon said Mr Dean's life was centred on public service, as a former firefighter and through working for the late Michael Meacher. He said: "He always rallied for community power and involvement in everything he did." He added: "He was also one of the nicest people you could have met."

Tributes also came from fellow councillors. Cllr Zahid Chauhan said he was proud to call Mr Dean a friend and would remember his warmth, decency and commitment. Cllr Josh Charters said Mr Dean had been a mentor to him since he joined the council, with detailed knowledge built up over 50 years as a councillor.

Naveed Chowhan, who represents Waterhead for the Oldham Group, said Mr Dean "served our borough with great dedication" and brought experience and commitment to the community he represented. On Oldham Reform's Facebook page, the party said his long record of service, including as Mayor of Oldham, reflected a lifetime devoted to local residents.
