An incident at Co-op Academy Blackley in neighbouring Blackley has left three people injured and led to the arrest of a schoolgirl, Greater Manchester Police have confirmed.

Emergency services remain at the scene on Plant Hill Road, Higher Blackley, after reports of a disturbance at the school on Tuesday afternoon. The school was placed into lockdown as a large number of police and ambulance vehicles arrived both outside the gates and within the grounds. A police helicopter was also seen circling overhead.

In a statement released this afternoon, GMP said a female pupil has been arrested and three people have sustained injuries. The force stressed the injuries are not believed to be serious at this time.

"Emergency services remain on scene and we are supporting the school," the statement read. "There is not believed to be any wider threat to the pupils and staff in the school."

The Co-op Academy Blackley serves the Blackley area, which lies just a few miles from the Oldham border. Many Oldham families have links to the school or live close enough to have witnessed the significant emergency response. The reassurance from police that there is no wider risk will be welcomed by parents and residents on both sides of the boundary.

Local councillors and school officials have yet to comment further. The school itself has not issued a public statement, but it is understood that support is being provided to students and staff affected by this morning’s events.
