A teenager wearing a balaclava was arrested after police chased a stolen moped at speeds of 60mph through Oldham and Middleton.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) released footage of the early-hours pursuit on Wednesday. It shows the moped being ridden on pavements. The chase began when an unmarked police car spotted the moped on Huddersfield Road in Oldham.

After a brief follow, the two riders tried to escape through a petrol station and both fell off. The passenger ran away, while the 17-year-old rider restarted the moped and continued fleeing.

A police helicopter tracked the moped from Oldham into Middleton. The teenager was eventually cornered in a cul-de-sac on Tonge Roughs, near Middleton Junction, after a "low speed tactical contact" with a police vehicle.

He tried to run but was caught by officers with a police dog. A machete was recovered.

The teenager was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop, possession of cannabis, possession of an offensive weapon, aggravated taking of a motor vehicle without consent, and being wanted for a serious assault with intent to rob. He remained in custody on Wednesday afternoon.

GMP is still searching for the second suspect. Inspector Tom Abbott said the force would deliver a "robust response" to offenders using roads for crime.
