A suspected thief who attempted to evade police by running onto the Ironman 70.3 course in Bolton on Sunday has been taken into custody, in what Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have described as a case of déjà vu. The incident highlights the ongoing efforts of GMP, which serves Oldham and the broader region, to tackle theft and ensure public safety during major events.

The man was first spotted by officers on patrol in Bolton town centre, where he was allegedly attempting to sell goods believed to be stolen. Upon noticing the police, he fled onto the Ironman trail, hoping to blend in with the crowds of athletes and spectators. However, his escape was short-lived as he was quickly apprehended by PC Wilkinson, the same officer who had arrested him during the Ironman 2025 event in Bolton.

A GMP spokesperson elaborated: "Whilst on patrol in Bolton Town Centre, officers spotted a male attempting to sell with what was suspected to be stolen goods. Upon spotting police, the male ran onto the Ironman 70.3 course but wasn't quick enough to escape PC Wilkinson. It was a case of deja vu from Ironman 2025 when the same male made off from officers onto the track and was detained by the same officer!"

The arrest was aided by off-duty police officers from Essex, who had travelled to Bolton for the Ironman 70.3 event. GMP confirmed: "The male was stopped a short distance away with help from off duty police officers who had travelled all the way from Essex for Ironman 70.3." This collaboration demonstrates the dedication of law enforcement personnel, even across regions, to assist in maintaining order.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of theft and handling stolen goods and remains in police custody for questioning.
