Police and emergency services were called to Co-op Academy in Blackley this morning after a 14-year-old girl allegedly stabbed a male member of staff in the neck and injured two other pupils. The school, part of the Co-op Academies Trust, was placed into immediate lockdown, and staff acted bravely to detain the student before police arrived.

The injuries sustained by the staff member and two pupils are not believed to be serious, and all three are in a stable condition in hospital. Greater Manchester Police confirmed that the girl was arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault and remains in custody for questioning. Officers have stated that this was an isolated incident with no wider threat to the public.

In a statement, the Co-op Academies Trust praised the swift actions of its staff. "Shortly after the start of the school day, an incident occurred on site involving a pupil with a knife," a spokesperson said. "The school was immediately placed into lockdown, and staff acted bravely to quickly detain a student before emergency services arrived. We are incredibly proud of the swift actions of our staff and the mature response of our pupils."

The Trust also addressed safety protocols, noting that while strict screening and search powers are in place, weapons can be small and easily concealed. "We had no reason to conduct a search on any student this morning," the spokesperson added.

Chief Inspector Jon Shilvock of GMP said, "We understand that this incident will have caused concern to pupils, staff, and the wider school community. The incident was swiftly and quickly dealt with by staff before officers attending to arrest the girl. There is believed to be no wider threat at this time, and we thank everyone for their support as emergency services dealt with this."

The school will reopen as normal tomorrow, 10th June, with full emotional support in place for pupils. Local officers will maintain a visible presence in the area for community reassurance.
