A dedicated volunteer from Sholver has been recognised as First Choice Homes Oldham’s (FCHO) Hidden Hero for April, celebrating her ongoing commitment to the local community through her work at Sholver Community Centre and her involvement in neighbourhood litter picks.

Debbie Thornton, 52, serves as the chair and bookings secretary of the community centre, which hosts a variety of local groups, including FCHO’s The Bread and Butter Thing affordable food initiative. Her efforts extend beyond the centre, as she regularly takes part in community litter picks and is an active member of FCHO’s Customer Engagement Network, where she shares her experiences to help shape the housing association’s services.

Speaking after receiving her certificate and a £50 voucher at the centre earlier this month, the mother-of-one said: “I’m over the moon to receive this and really grateful to First Choice Homes for giving it to me, it means a lot to be thought of. I do what I do because I want to make a difference in my community. Helping others genuinely brings me joy and right now it feels more important than ever to build a strong sense of community.”

Miss Thornton was nominated for the award by FCHO customer involvement officer Tanisha Rigby, who praised her dedication. “If you ask people in Sholver and Moorside what makes their community centre work so well, Debbie’s name often comes up,” said Rigby. “She gives a huge amount of her time to helping the centre remain a welcoming place where people can meet, connect and support one another.”

“What makes Debbie a Hidden Hero is the dedication she shows to the people around her. She volunteers her time, supports local initiatives and helps create opportunities for neighbours to come together,” Rigby added.

Sholver Community Centre has become a vital hub for the area, providing a space for groups and activities that strengthen local ties. Through her volunteer work, Debbie exemplifies the spirit of community support that FCHO’s Hidden Hero award aims to highlight. Her efforts not only keep the centre running smoothly but also inspire others to get involved, making a real difference in the lives of residents across Sholver and beyond.
