A quick-thinking police community support officer from Oldham has been hailed a hero after saving a man’s life during a routine patrol in Saddleworth. PCSO Mike Lowther, who serves with the Saddleworth Neighbourhood Policing Team, has been nominated for a Greater Manchester Police award following his actions in April.

While on patrol on Ripponden Road, a remote area known for its challenging terrain, PCSO Lowther spotted a van parked with its engine running and lights on. Concerned by the unusual scene, he attempted to get the occupant’s attention but received no response. Opening the rear doors of the vehicle, he discovered a man in distress. Without hesitation, he activated his emergency button and kept control room staff updated while intervening to preserve the man’s life.

The man soon regained consciousness, and PCSO Lowther removed the keys from the ignition to prevent further danger. He remained with the man, engaging with him until additional officers arrived. The man was later taken to Royal Oldham Hospital for treatment, highlighting the direct link between local policing and the care available in our community.

Sergeant Ryan Orme, from GMP’s Oldham Response Unit, praised PCSO Lowther’s professionalism and quick thinking. He said: “PCSO Lowther’s actions throughout this incident were highly commendable. His professionalism, calm decision making, and instinctive intervention were directly aligned with the objectives of neighbourhood policing being visible and accessible. His actions undoubtedly saved a life and exemplify the value of being proactive, vigilant, and professionally curious while on patrol.”

Reflecting on the incident, PCSO Lowther emphasised the importance of community presence. He said: “I’m proud to serve as a PCSO for Saddleworth North. Proud to work in a community where being present, being vigilant, and being willing to step forward can genuinely make a difference. Rural policing can be challenging and unpredictable, but it’s moments like this that remind me why I do this job.”

Greater Manchester Police has confirmed that PCSO Lowther has been nominated for an award in recognition of his lifesaving actions. This incident underscores the vital role of community support officers in Oldham and the surrounding areas, demonstrating how vigilance on routine patrols can have a profound impact on local lives.
