Saddleworth Medical Practice staff are walking a 12-mile charity route to raise money for two young children in their family who face a future loss of sight.

Nurse Lynn McCann will be joined by five other nurses and reception staff for the Saddleworth Three Peaks challenge on Saturday, August 1. The walk aims to support her grandchildren, Emmeline, eight, and Abel, two.

Both children were born deaf and were diagnosed in December 2025 with Usher's Syndrome type 2. This genetic condition means they will eventually lose their sight, though the timing varies for each individual.

The fundraiser will help fulfil the children's sight bucket list wishes and support the Cure Usher Syndrome charity. A friend set up a Go Fund me page and held a charity haircut day to raise awareness. Later, a nurse at the practice suggested the Saddleworth Three Peaks charity walk after a cake sale fundraiser.

The route begins at The White Hart in Lydgate, taking in Wharmton Hill, Alphin, Indian's Head, and Pots and Pans. The group plans to finish at The Cross Keys Inn in Uppermill.

Emmeline, who loves football, has wishes including see a volcano, see the snow in Norway, be a mascot for the Lionesses and meet Hannah Hampton, and to see the glowing sea. Abel is still deciding on his list items.

Donations can be made through the group's Just Giving page, with proceeds going towards the children's experiences and the medical research charity.
