The result of the election to choose the next Mayor of Greater Manchester is being decided after voters went to the polls on Thursday, May 30. The vote was triggered by Andy Burnham's departure to become Prime Minister.

Ballots from across the region's ten boroughs are being counted at Manchester's Co-op Live venue. The overall turnout in Greater Manchester was 25.14%, with 406,516 votes cast from a total electorate of 2,142,779 eligible voters. In Tameside, the turnout was approximately 25.3%.

The count is being run in two rounds. If a candidate gains more than 50% of the vote share in the first round, a second round will not be needed. Organisers say only the top two candidates will be announced after the first round, with full results for all parties revealed at the end of the count.

Full results are expected to be announced after six o'clock. The parties themselves will be given the results as they happen.

Phil Eckersley, standing for the Conservatives, visited Saddleworth and was the first candidate to do so. The Liberal Democrat candidate Richard Kilpatrick also attended the count, describing the contest as an interesting one.
