Saddleworth marked Yorkshire Day with a ceremony before the statue of Ammon Wrigley in Uppermill, where the traditional declaration drew the response "God save Yorkshire".

Cllr Barbara Beeley, chair of Saddleworth Parish Council, read out the declaration to dozens of people gathered for the event on Sunday, August 2.

It is 52 years since Saddleworth was taken from the West Riding of Yorkshire and placed in the newly formed Greater Manchester, but many people are still Yorkshire at heart. The white rose emblem dominated the celebrations.

Oliver Benson carried the standard as members of Uppermill and Greenfield Bands combined, their brass music echoing through the air. White rose floral decorations were handed out, many worn on Yorkshire t-shirts, and a steam-powered vehicle was on display featuring what Saddleworth was once part of.

Debbie Abrahams, the area's MP, attended along with Oldham borough councillors Pam Byrne, Shaid Mushtaq and Max Woodvine.

Ms Abrahams said: "I've come to celebrate, as I try to do every year. I can't always get there at some times that family things happen, but I do cherish coming to events like this."
