Royton Library will reopen at a temporary home from Monday 19 October while repair work is carried out at its Rochdale Road building.

The temporary library will run from Downey House on Church Street, Royton, OL2 5JS. Downey House is the historic former home of the Cooper family of cotton manufacturers and is now home to St Paul's Parish Centre.

The move follows the temporary closure of Royton Library on Rochdale Road so flooring inside the building can be investigated and repaired. Oldham Council said the works are essential to ensure the library remains a safe, welcoming and accessible space for the future.

The temporary Royton Library service at Downey House will be open 9am to 5pm on Monday and Saturday at 9.30am to 1pm. It will offer a book lending service, with a collection of popular titles for adults and children available to borrow.

Subnum Hariff-Khan, Head of Heritage, Libraries and Arts for Oldham Council, said: "We know how important Royton Library is to local residents and we're pleased to be able to continue delivering a library service within the community while these essential repairs take place.

"We'd like to thank customers for their patience and understanding while these essential works are carried out to secure the future of this important library building."

While Royton Library is closed, residents can use Fitton Hill Library and Neighbourhood Centre and Oldham Library and Lifelong Learning Centre. Digital services including eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMagazines and online reference resources are available at hla.oldham.gov.uk/libraries.

The council said it will continue to provide updates on the repair programme and will confirm a reopening date for Royton Library as soon as further information becomes available.
