A police sergeant expressed concern after finding entrance signs and barriers moved at Dovestone Reservoir, where visitors were seen smoking cannabis despite the site being closed due to a wildfire.

Sergeant Andy Holian, of Greater Manchester Police, discovered the barriers at Bank Lane and Holmfirth Road had been moved to the side on Saturday evening (August 1). He encountered a group of men in the car park who had travelled from West Yorkshire.

According to Sergeant Holian, the group had come to take pictures and smoke cannabis. One man was found in possession of cannabis and was dealt with for the offence before the group was removed.

Upon leaving, the sergeant met three separate groups walking into the area and informed them of the closure. He stressed that all visitors encountered were not local residents.

All public access to Dovestone Reservoir remains closed following the wildfire. Temporary traffic restrictions are in place, allowing access only for emergency services and residents. New restrictions have been implemented by Oldham Council.

Firefighters continue to tackle hotspots in dry and challenging conditions. Sergeant Holian thanked local residents for their support in staying away, allowing Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service to carry out preventative operations.
