More than 30 volunteers were treated to a pie supper at Emmaus Mossley last week as the charity thanked the “priceless” army of people who keep its work going.

The event, held on Thursday 4 June at the charity’s community home in Mossley, brought together 33 local volunteers and trustees. Staff and residents supported by Emmaus also attended to show their appreciation for the time, energy and skills given freely by volunteers.

Emmaus Mossley, which supports people to overcome homelessness for good by providing a home and tailored support, relies on a team of 86 volunteers. They work as trustees, in the charity shop, as van drivers, upcyclers, and remotely.

Volunteer Collette said: “It was really nice having everyone together and a privilege to be served a beautiful pie supper and cake. I love working alongside all the people at Emmaus and the ethos of the organisation is the main reason why I contribute my time each week.”

The supper was organised during Volunteers’ Week, the UK-wide campaign that runs from the first Monday in June celebrating the contributions of volunteers. The event was supported by Action Together’s Tameside Volunteer Celebration Fund.

Ann, a member of Emmaus Mossley’s Upcycle Group, added: “It gives me a sense of pride and purpose knowing that I’m making something that somebody else wants, all whilst helping fund Emmaus. We make some fantastic stuff and have lots of fun. I’m not just helping Emmaus, they help me too.”

The charity’s CEO, Ant Hopkinson, said: “Our volunteers contribute an estimated 320 hours every week and that amounts to more than 15,000 volunteer hours annually! Behind every one of those hours is a person making a conscious choice to give their time, skills, energy and care to others.

“When people invest in their community, that community becomes stronger, and in turn, that creates more opportunities for people to connect, contribute and thrive. To every volunteer who gives their time, thank you. The impact of your contribution reaches far beyond what any statistic can measure.”

While the charity is based in Mossley, its services support people from across the area, including Oldham. Many volunteers and donors from Oldham also contribute to its work. The charity operates a furniture shop and upcycling workshop, both open to the public.
