208 people picked free fruit at a 160-tree heritage orchard in Failsworth during a summer project funded by First Choice Homes Oldham (FCHO).

Pick, Press and Play was run by FCHO and Northern Lily over four sessions in August. Apples, pears, blackberries and plums worth nearly £1000 were picked, washed, weighed and processed before being taken home in many cases.

Visitors to the Grassroots site in Marlborough Drive could also make free fresh apple juice with Northern Lily's traditional fruit press. In total, 208kg of apples, pears, plums and blackberries were harvested and shared with the 208 people who took part.

FCHO's head of tenancy and neighbourhoods Gemma Dolby said the housing association had given £1400 to enable the events. She said those taking part were aged from zero to 78-years-old and many live in its homes near the orchard.

Founder and director of Northern Lily, Victoria Holden, said the programme had brought people together to learn where fresh food comes from and take home free fruit. Danielle Jones, who brought her son Seb, said: "This is a brilliant day out for me and Seb - we've even brought some of our friends along with us."
