Oldham's Mahdlo Youth Zone appeals for 15 new mentors during Volunteers' Week
Mahdlo Youth Zone in Oldham appeals for 15 mentors to support local youth, marking Volunteers' Week and its 15th anniversary.

Mahdlo Youth Zone, the Oldham-based youth charity, is marking Volunteers’ Week by launching an appeal for 15 new mentors to join its team as part of its 15th anniversary year.
The mentoring programme provides one-to-one support for young people aged eight to 19, and up to 25 for those with additional needs. Mentors, who must be aged 21 or over, commit to weekly sessions over a period of 12 to 24 months, helping young people build confidence, raise aspirations, and work towards their future goals.
Mentors use their own skills, life experience, and strengths to help young people navigate challenges, offering a positive and consistent presence in their lives. Volunteers receive an enhanced DBS check, comprehensive training, and ongoing support throughout their mentoring journey at Mahdlo.
The recruitment campaign is part of Mahdlo’s 15th anniversary celebrations, which are taking place throughout 2026. It comes during Volunteers’ Week, a national event that recognises the contribution of volunteers across the UK.
Marvin McKenzie, Mentoring Coordinator at Mahdlo Youth Zone, said: “Our mentors are a trusted presence in the lives of young people at a time when having someone in their corner can make a lasting impact. For many young people, having that regular face-to-face connection with an adult who listens, shows up every week and offers encouragement can help them realise what they’re capable of.
“We are looking for 15 new mentors as part of our 15th anniversary year and I would encourage anyone considering volunteering to find out more. You do not need previous mentoring experience. What matters most is a willingness to build a positive relationship with a young person and support them to develop confidence and resilience.”
Joanne, a mentor at Mahdlo Youth Zone, shared her experience: “I found out about mentoring on the Mahdlo website but it took me a while to pluck up the courage to apply. I wish I’d done it sooner. I never could have imagined how much being a mentor would enrich my life. That was never my intention, I wanted to be the one to give!
“Mahdlo is fantastic to be a part of and the support I receive is unwavering. I would tell anyone who has a bit of time to give and wants to make even a tiny bit of difference to a young person’s life to sign up. You’ll be making a difference to your own life too, perhaps without realising it.”
No previous experience is required to become a mentor. Anyone interested in finding out more or applying can visit Mahdlo’s mentoring page or email the team at [email protected].
Mahdlo Youth Zone has been a cornerstone of the community in Oldham for 15 years, providing a safe and inclusive space for young people to develop skills, make friends, and access support. The mentoring programme is just one of the many ways the charity helps young people thrive, and volunteers are essential to its success.
