On Tuesday, April 7, Oldham Mountain Rescue Team (OMRT) were midway through their monthly meeting in Greenfield when Greater Manchester Police called with an urgent report. A group of walkers had become stranded after losing their way off the hillside near Birchen Clough, prompting an immediate response from the 18 assembled volunteers.

The team swiftly mobilised, leaving their meeting to head towards the scene. Rescuers travelled by 4×4 vehicle to the base of Birchen Clough, a steep and rocky area close to Dove Stone Reservoir that is popular with local hikers. From there, they continued on foot, navigating the challenging terrain to locate the lost walkers.

Once found, the group were safely escorted back down the hillside towards waiting vehicles. A Remote Rescue Medical Technician checked each person for injuries or signs of distress. The operation lasted around two hours and fifteen minutes, concluding without any serious injuries among the walkers. The team's efficient response ensured the situation ended safely and calmly.
