An Oldham man who lost four stone after experiencing a heart attack scare is among those whose lives have been transformed by local health initiatives, as the borough ramps up its fight against Type 2 diabetes and other serious conditions.

Oldham Council and NHS Oldham Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) are joining forces to tackle Type 2 diabetes through participation in a government initiative. This project aims to identify residents at risk and provide them with lifestyle interventions to prevent the disease, which can lead to heart attacks, strokes, and other complications.

Alongside this, the REACH exercise referral programme marks 20 years of success in Oldham. Run by Oldham Active in partnership with NHS Greater Manchester Integrated Care, REACH—Referrals Encouraging Activity, Confidence and Health—has supported 3,906 individuals in the borough recovering from cardiac, pulmonary, and other conditions. The programme offers customized exercise regimens that help participants regain strength, confidence, and overall health.

The effectiveness of these prevention efforts is reflected in NHS statistics from Greater Manchester. In the past year, 380 major health emergencies were averted, including 180 heart attacks and 200 strokes. This equates to preventing a heart attack every other day and a stroke every day, highlighting the importance of early action.

For Oldham residents, these programmes provide vital support. Anyone concerned about diabetes risk can get help through local GPs, while those with existing health issues can access REACH through Oldham Active. The council and NHS urge residents to take advantage of these resources to improve their wellbeing.

The story of the Oldham dad who lost four stone after a heart attack scare serves as a powerful example of how lifestyle changes, supported by such initiatives, can make a real difference. His journey underscores the value of prevention and the impact of local programmes like REACH and the diabetes initiative.

With continued investment and collaboration, Oldham is well placed to further reduce serious health risks and ensure better health outcomes for all its residents.
