Martin Foster, programme lead for the Greater Manchester Hospices Provider Collaborative, took on a 100-kilometre run in a single day to support Dr Kershaw’s Hospice in Oldham and other hospices across the region.

The equivalent of two-and-a-half marathons, his challenge on Thursday, April 2 saw him run between nine hospices, including Dr Kershaw’s, Willow Wood, and Francis House. Upon arriving at Dr Kershaw’s, he was cheered on by staff, his wife Lucy, and his children Freddie and Tilly.

Mr Foster, who began training last summer, aimed to raise £5,000 to help meet the growing financial pressures faced by hospices. Across Greater Manchester, NHS contributions cover only a quarter to a third of operating costs, forcing hospices to rely heavily on donations and fundraising events.

Hospices in the region are currently facing a significant funding gap. The deficit for seven adult hospices stands at £1.6 million, with projections suggesting it could rise to £4.8 million by 2027. Capital funding from the government cannot be used for everyday costs, leaving essential services like Dr Kershaw’s wellbeing centre activities dependent on community support.

Mr Foster said: “I love the hospices in Greater Manchester. Each one offers local people, some facing challenges I can’t even imagine, and their network something they simply can’t get anywhere else. This is devoted, specialist palliative care, defined by expertise and kindness. It means people can live their best possible lives in the time they have, as close to home as possible and surrounded by the people they love. It is what I would want for my family, and it breaks my heart to think anyone might miss out.”

Reflecting on the day, he added: “It was truly special; the longest day of my life, yet also one of the absolute best. The support I felt on the way around was something I will never forget – not least from the amazing staff at Dr Kershaw’s Hospice. Now I am just waiting for the swelling in my ankles to go down a bit!”
