Plans for speed bumps on Haven Lane in Moorside have been rejected after strong opposition from local residents. Oldham Council's highways committee instead decided to extend a 20mph speed limit along the road.

The speed bumps were required under a Section 106 agreement, which is a legal obligation for developers to fund community improvements. They were linked to a housing development of 23 properties off Haven Lane and were intended to address traffic issues from the new homes.

Dozens of residents objected to the proposals, citing concerns about noise, damage to vehicles, and parking. One resident reported that accidents had increased and vehicles had suffered damage to wing mirrors since similar measures were introduced elsewhere. Trevor Cash, chairman of Moorside East Residents Association, said the bumps could lead to vibration, sleep disturbance, and reduced amenity for those living close to the road.

At the council meeting, Conservative councillor Beth Sharp described the past seven years as a 'nightmare' for residents and argued the speed bumps would be 'just another nail in the coffin'. Councillor Josh Charters added that residents should be involved in decision-making. The committee agreed to extend the 20mph speed limit, believing it would address the concerns raised.
