An Oldham College student has won the 16-19 Learner of the Year award at the GM Skills Awards, which celebrate excellence in further education and skills across Greater Manchester.

Lily Edgar Booth, who is on the college's Step into Education course, was nominated for her determination, resilience and excellence. The college described her journey from being homeschooled to thriving at college as "nothing short of extraordinary."

Lily also took part in the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award, volunteered in a charity shop, worked with Oldham Foodbank and served as one of Oldham College's Student Executives.

She now plans to study further to become a vehicle mechanic.

Oldham College was shortlisted in two other categories at the awards. The ESOL department's Community Interpreting provision was up for Community Initiative of the Year, and Harvey Dalton, an electrical apprentice, was nominated for Advanced Apprentice of the Year.

Chellé Charlesworth, Director of English, Maths, ESOL and Step Into Education at Oldham College, said Lily's success reflects the determination and resilience shown by many learners.
