An Oldham College student has been named the '16-19 Learner of the Year' at the prestigious GM Skills Awards, in recognition of her remarkable journey from home-schooling to becoming a community champion.

The GM Skills Awards, delivered in partnership between the Greater Manchester Learner Provider Network (GMLPN) and the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce (GMCC), celebrate the very best of further education and skills training across the region.

A student on Oldham College’s Step into Education programme, Lily’s transition from being homeschooled to thriving in a bustling college environment was described by staff as 'nothing short of extraordinary'. Her journey has been defined by a drive to push beyond her personal comfort zone and embrace every opportunity presented to her.

Lily did not just focus on her academic work; she quickly became a pillar of the college and the wider Oldham community. She successfully completed her Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award, volunteered her time at a local charity shop, and gave up her time to support the Oldham Foodbank, a crucial service tackling food poverty right across the borough. She also found her voice as a Student Executive, taking on the responsibility of representing the views of her peers and helping to shape the direction of college life.

Motivated by her experiences at college and her growing confidence, Lily has set her sights on a completely new career path. She is now planning further study to become a qualified vehicle mechanic, a shining example of the aspirational outcomes that the Step into Education programme aims to foster.

Oldham College enjoyed a successful night at the awards, reinforcing its status as a hub for opportunity in the borough. The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) department’s Community Interpreting provision was nominated for the Community Initiative of the Year award, highlighting its vital work in breaking down language barriers for residents across the town and ensuring everyone can access the services they need.

In addition, Electrical apprentice Harvey Dalton was shortlisted for the Advanced Apprentice of the Year award, underlining the strength of Oldham College’s vocational training and its direct contribution to the local workforce and economy. These skilled apprentices are vital to businesses right across Oldham.

The recognition for Lily, Harvey, and the ESOL department is a powerful endorsement of the high-quality education and personal development opportunities available at Oldham College. It proves that students of all backgrounds can achieve excellence with the right support, and can make a profound difference in their community, just as Lily has done.
