Oldham College has opened a Futures Hub, a single base for careers advice, apprenticeships, employment support and higher education guidance.

Principal and chief executive Simon Jordan opened it with FE Student Governor Yousra Benmessaoud, who cut the ribbon. Local employers, community partners, governors, staff and students attended.

Guests heard from BBC political reporter Kevin Fitzpatrick, a former Oldham College student, and Matthew Powell of Loudspeaker, which helps young people build confidence and communication skills.

Students can get one-to-one careers advice, help with CVs and interviews, university application support and introductions to local employers. Apprenticeship and job opportunities are also advertised there.

Simon Jordan said: "Our role goes beyond helping students achieve qualifications. We have a responsibility to raise aspirations, widen access to opportunities and prepare people for the world of work." He said the hub brings education and employers closer together, and that stronger links help build the skilled workforce and stronger local economy Oldham needs.

Yousra, who cut the ribbon with Simon, came to England from Morocco at 16 and started at the college on English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses. She has since progressed to the Surveying and Design for Construction and the Built Environment T Level and become FE Student Governor.

She said: "One small conversation, one opportunity or someone taking the time to encourage you can make a real difference to a student's confidence and future."

Students played live music and served refreshments at the event.

Any student at the college can use the hub by calling in without an appointment, or by asking their tutor to arrange a careers guidance session.

The college is also advertising all-ages open events on Wednesday 17th March and Saturday 14th November, and Oldham College Connect: Business meets education.
