An Oldham College student has won the 16-19 Learner of the Year title at the GM Skills Awards 2026.

Lily Edgar Booth received the award for her "determination, resilience and excellence." She is a learner on the college's Step into Education course.

Her nomination highlighted her journey from being home-schooled to thriving in college. As part of her studies, Lily has also completed the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award, volunteered in a charity shop, worked with Oldham Foodbank, and served as a Student Executive at Oldham College.

Lily now plans to study further to become a vehicle mechanic.

"It was a privilege to witness Lily being named 16-19 Learner of the Year," said Chellé Charlesworth, Director of English, Maths, ESOL and Step Into Education at Oldham College. "Her inspiring journey is a powerful reminder of why we do what we do every day: supporting learners to overcome barriers and realise their potential."

The GM Skills Awards celebrate excellence in further education and skills across Greater Manchester. Oldham College was also recognised in two other categories. Its ESOL Community Interpreting provision was shortlisted for Community Initiative of the Year, and Harvey Dalton, an electrical apprentice, was shortlisted for Advanced Apprentice of the Year.
